Nigerians have taken to their X handle to express outrage over the increasing cost of apartments in the country, and blaming excessive agents fees.
The controversy was sparked by a social media post highlighting the alleged extortion, which read: “House rent N700k, Agency fee N250k, shey na you build the house?
Many Nigerians shared similar experiences, with some claiming to have been charged exorbitant fees for services rendered by agents.
One Twitter user, @KamiyoJnr, lamented, “House rent: N700k, Agency fee: N250k. Shey na you build the house for me? No wonder the apartments are empty. It’s high time the government starts regulating these agents.”
Another user @TimothySeye7, shared his experience of searching for an apartment in Magodo, where he was quoted N3m for a 3-bedroom apartment, plus an additional N900k for agency and legal fees. “Lagos State needs to crack down on house agents in Lagos, it’s mad!” he exclaimed.
Another handler, Adelanibabtun5, pointed out that lawyers also share in the agent fees, adding to the expense.
Meanwhile, some X users insist that Agents are significant. @Adelanibabtun5: “You will still need us sir, the main issue are the lawyer that want to share agent fee”
@bobodim: “Give your property to professional and registered Estate Management firms/companie,,
you won’t regret it.”
