A social media user, @Yemiefash, sparked a heated debate by asking why the “Japa syndrome” (mass migration of Nigerians to other countries) seems to affect the South more than the North in Nigeria.
@Yemiefash posed the question, “Why is the Japa syndrome not affecting the North like the South in Nigeria?”
Nigerians quickly reacted, offering various reasons. @mroieniola suggested that Northern Nigerians tend to travel for education but often return home after completing their studies. “A fun fact is that they travel more than any region for education, but they come back after studying,” he said.
Another user, @cisero81, listed several countries where Northern Nigerians study, including Sudan, Malaysia, Egypt, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Tunisia, Qatar, Dubai, Turkey, India, Indonesia, Singapore, China, Russia, Syria. “Majority come back after studies. They don’t really mix well outside their comfort zone,” he added.
@BrosYomi observed that the few Northerners who do migrate (or “Japa”) often return home to take up civil or public service jobs, staying content and rising through the ranks. “The ones that venture into businesses also stay consistent,” he noted.
